Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital

Department of Paediatrics

Name of Head of Department: Prof. Dr. Sudha Basnet

Brief History of Department:

The Department of Child Health although established when Tribhuvan University Teaching hospital (TUTH) became operational  in 1972, initially provided clinical  services and conducted its academic activities at the nearby government hospital for children, Kanti Children Hospital. The Pediatric service provided by the Department was shifted from Kanti Children Hospital in its own building within Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital premises, inaugurated by Late Prime Minister G. P. Koirala in 2007 following which preliminary OPD services was started. This move was fueled by the need to develop subspecialty pediatric services and provide multidisciplinary care to children in need in a more coordinated way.

In July 2008 inpatient services were started, initially with a 30-bed pediatric ward and later extended to 60 beds occupying two floors of the pediatric building. Over the years services provided by the Department has expanded and in December 2012, 4-bedded Pediatric and 6-bedded Neonatal intensive care unit was started at 4thfloor of the Pediatric building. Independent Pediatric Emergency service located at the ground floor of the pediatric building was started from August 2013. Pediatric and Neonatal high dependency units, consisting of 5 beds each, have been started, expanding services for critically ill pediatric patients. Pediatric endoscopy and electroencephalography services have also been established along with other subspecialty clinics in Nephrology, Neurology, Pulmonology and Gastroenterology.

The Department in collaboration with internationally acclaimed institutions such as University of Bergen, Norway, John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Center for Disease Control, Atlanta (USA), Oxford University (UK), and WHO, Geneva, has been conducting research on pertinent issues related to child health and published articles in several peer reviewed journals of good standing. At present, there are several research projects ongoing under the department's leadership.
